Acrylic Sheet

The most common acrylic plastic is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is sold under the brand names of Plexiglas, Lucite, Perspex,  PMMA is a tough, highly transparent material with excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation and weathering. It can be colored, molded, cut, drilled, and formed. These properties make it ideal for many applications including airplane windshields, skylights, automobile taillights, and outdoor signs. One notable application is the ceiling which is composed of hundreds of double-insulating panels of PMMA acrylic Sheet. Acrylic plastic polymers are formed by reacting a monomer, such as methyl methacrylate, with a catalyst. A typical catalyst would be an organic peroxide. The catalyst starts the reaction and enters into it to keep it going, but does not become part of the resulting polymer.

How To Install Acrylic Sheets

1. Measure the surface space you intend to attach the acrylic too accurately – This may seem like a rather redundant point to emphasise but you would be surprised.
2. Once you know the dimensions of the surface, you need to subtract 3mm from every meter.
3. What ever you are left with is the size your plastic sheet ought to be when it comes to fixing it onto the surface. Don’t worry about it not fitting correctly though; the moisture & heat in the air will cause the acrylic to expand and fill the gaps.
4. When you receive your acrylic it should have a thin film of polyethylene on it, do not remove it. There will come a time when you can remove it of course, but this is not that time. Stay your hand.
5. If by the time you read this you had already removed the film, kick yourself. If not then please skip point 6.
6. Now that you have kicked yourself, do not worry. If the film has been removed place parcel tape over the areas that you will be machining and it ought to be fine.
7. Mark out clearly and precisely where you intend to drill, cut or saw; and do so directly on to the protective film, not the acrylic itself.
8. When marking, do not use scribes, punches, knives, chisels, etc. as these may well damage the acrylic.
9. If you plan on drilling holes in any corners do so before doing anything else, as the thinner the gap between the outside edge and the area being drilled the more chance there is of the material splitting or cracking.
10. No drilled hole should have a diameter less than 10mm.
11. Before you start machining acrylic sheets ensure that the side of the sheet which will be facing outwards once installed is facing upwards so that you can see it.
12. If you plan on cutting out anything that is not on the edge of the sheet, mark it out clearly on the protective film and drill a hole through the inside of one of the corners.
13. Neaten and smooth over the rough edges caused by sawing and drilling the sheet.
